The rental unit makeover is at the finish line! The powder room was the last room that really needed some renovation love and because it’s a rental, I tried to use the least money possible while still giving the room some major personality. Sure, it would have been easy for me to paint the walls blah beige and make sure that all the fixtures worked, even if they were ugly, but one thing that makes my rentals stand out from the rest is style! And no one has to know that it’s style on the cheap.
This is the bathroom when I first started.
And this is how it looks now!
One thing that brought a a lot of personality to the space is the vinyl wallpaper I bought from Target. This was my first time hanging wallpaper and because this wallpaper is re-positionable, it was so much easier than I thought it would be. It was definitely a good first wallpaper experience! And I had to hang wallpaper on a slope above my head, and it was STILL a positive experience.
Because I have a ton of paint samples from painting my own house, I grabbed a dark blue and a deep green paint sample from Ben Moore, mixed them together, and voila! I had a beautiful dark teal color that perfectly accented the green and white wallpaper.
If you’re looking to mimic the color, I would use Stonecutter Green from Benjamin Moore.
The sink was from a local used building supply store, Community Forklift for you locals, that I frequently shop at for not only my rentals but also for my own home. You can’t beat the prices, the quality, and the fact that you are keeping something perfectly re-usable from ending up in a landfill. It’s also a non-profit and the profits made go back into the community to build low income houses so it really is a win-win overall. And I paid a whopping $75 for a Kohler sink that retails for about $800. Score!
Same goes for the light fixture. I bought that used from Habitat for Humanity ReStore, hung it, and it worked perfectly.
The only thing that irked me with this renovation is that the contractor I hired to install the sink installed it off-centered because he said that the plumbing wasn’t centered. Wish I wouldn’t known that before he glued the sink the wall. *Sigh.* I would’ve asked him to move the plumbing but in reality, that would’ve been pricy so maybe the off-centered sink was for the best.
I ended up mitigating the cockeyed look of it with accessories from Target. I just filled in that little extra space on the side with a stool, towels, and a candle and made it look like I totally meant for that space to be there. 🤫
Target really was the best place to shop for the accessories for the space and I went with a neutral black, white, and tan theme to tie the wall colors together.
The print that I used was also from Target. I got it from the frame department (not their “art” department) and the palm tree insert to sell the frame happened to fit perfectly with my theme for the bathroom so I went with it.
So, there you have it! A low budget reno thanks to second hand fixtures and Target accessories.
